More proof that Colorado is the best state ever, seriously

The guy who invented Earth Day is from Denver.

Oh!  And, apparently Denver has its very own Earth Day, in addition to National Earth Day, which coincides with Global Earth Day.  Check it out!

WHEREAS, John McConnell , a Denver resident first proposed a “holiday” for our planet on November 1969 at the UNESCO Conference on the Environment in San Francisco, resulting in the first EARTH DAY celebration being held on the Vernal Equinox (equal day and night time around the world) in 1970 in San Francisco, followed by issuance of a proclamation by the United Nations Secretary-General on February 26, 1971 and by the President of the United States on March 28, 1975; designating the first day of Spring as EARTH DAY; and
WHEREAS, Global EARTH DAY has been celebrated on the first day of Spring by the United Nations every year since 1971; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McConnell’s pioneering efforts have led to the creation and celebration of Earth Day being celebrated here in the United States on April 22nd of each year; and

WHEREAS, John McConnell has devoted much of his life to the pursuit of peace on Earth, happiness for all people, and the protection of our planet Earth; and

WHEREAS, The human family has inherited a beautiful planet and has been given stewardship responsibilities over the Earth; and

WHEREAS, An annual world-wide celebration of Earth’s significance and needs will remind present generations that a sustainable world requires everyone to ensure the ability of future generations to support themselves and nurture their offspring and Earth’s diverse creatures; and

WHEREAS, The City and County of Denver desires to be the first local government in the United States to officially recognize the first day of spring as Global EARTH DAY and Mr. McConnell for his many contributions.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN W. HICKENLOOPER, MAYOR of the City and County of Denver, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby officially proclaim March 20, 2005 to be known as:

“DENVER’S EARTH DAY”
In Honor of John McConnell
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the official seal of the City and County of Denver to be affixed this twentieth day of March, 2005.

Ahhh.  John Hickenlooper is dreamy.  In a purely political, not even remotely romantic, sort of way.  Someday, I will tell you the story of when I used to be a waitress and Mayor Hickenlooper stiffed me.  In a totally tip centered, non sexual way.  He’s married people, come on.
